SEO – the dreaded three letters Internet Marketers love to talk about, yet find really confusing. Sure, we can blame Google for being super-secretive about how they optimize their search engine results – they’re an easy scapegoat. Pick any given topic on SEO, and you are certain to start a debate that could go on into the wee hours of the morning. However, SEO is a super important subject and a very hot topic to discuss and understand.
If you are running a blog, this article is for you – some tips and tricks that can help you gain more exposure and recognition in the SEO world. Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list, but merely some suggestions on how to improve things like your Alexa score and reach
1. Take any website you own and register it with Alexa. The process takes you no more than 20-30 minutes to do. To do this, go to the Alexa website and click on the “Site Tools” tab. From there, you can click on the link to the left saying “Claim Your Site”. Follow the instructions within and watch your score drop like a rock in about a week’s time.
2. Word Press users – install an SEO plugin pack to your theme. The most popular plugins are either Platinum SEO (which I use) or All In One SEO. Of course, make sure that you use these plugins by inserting your keywords, tags and descriptions in the General settings as well as with each post to your blog.
3. Use shortened Permalinks in your blog. In other words, change your blog posting URL from something like http://gonzalochagas.com/p=123 to http://gonzalochagas.com/simple_seo_tricks. You can easily set this in the Permalinks setting from your Word Press admin tool. Use the custom field and enter /%postname%.html.
4. Submit your sites to the search engines! Don’t get sucked into the notion that submitting your site to Google is enough, since they have an 80%+ market share of searches. You need to build credibility and relevance with your website – and the search engines often look to each other to see if they too, have your website listed. This can truly help you rise to the top of your much-loved keyword searches.
Plenty more could be said about SEO, but these four tips should help give your website’s SEO power a bit of a boost. Give them a try – you have nothing to lose and a higher page rank to gain.
